I did acknowledge the happiness of meeting many of my good CKF friends and I missed the one that has always been present in all my paddles with CKF, from the first in 2000-2001. Always quiet, not many but very accurate words, always willing to participate, always enthusiast and always friendly. Dave O?Connor, I remember you well and miss not having gone out with you to the San Diego Bay, since I had to take some courses. I also remember all the adventures you have been in, and those in which you damaged part of the SoCalif Coast line with your head. Take care my friend. I also would like to mention two things, regarding the Symposium, in strict justice. On the braces and edging class with Ronnie and Marsha, I got two pieces of advice that will make the difference if I practice them right. Let me explain. We worked as couples. One guy, standing in the water would tilt the boat inadvertently in all directions from the stern, and the paddler had to LOW brace to stay afloat. I was committed to avoid being turned over and I put all my energy and reflexes to work with good success until Ronnie came and said that I was not returning to the vertical with my hip but by pushing from the blade. Specially on the left side. And there it was my ever existing unnoticed defect. So I have to practice to automatically hip snap my way back. That will make the difference and reduce capsizes. Next on the high brace sculling, I was given some advise that helped moving my leaning angle a lot. That is what I was looking for. Finally, on the Fun with Foster class that my son Gustavo took, he had so much fun, that he describes it as a very good class. He is committed to show me many of the strokes he learned, next time in the water, and he was able to stand and paddle standing his kayak. Nigel asked him where he learned and he told him that watching one of his videos. I think Nigel Foster has contributed a lot to the training of many many people. And then you talk to him and you find the most humble, nice, easy talking, friendly person. He must be in all future Aqua Adventures Symposiums, like many other excellent instructors that we had. And I do mean direction"s". Plural. Being as it is on the Palos Verdes Peninsula and depending on the direction you are coming from, there are many ways to get to the launch spot. Almost none of them are very direct given the topography of Palos Verdes and the road layout on the peninsula. I can go through a long text direction thing here or I can clarify what to look for on MapQuest and each can sort out how to best get there dependant on where they are coming from. Go to Map Quest look up "Palos Verdes Peninsula LA County". Once there zoom in on Point Vicente park. It is the point at the southwest corner of the peninsula. The park is where Palos Verdes Drive West turns into Palos Verdes Drive South on the Map Quest map. The launch spot and parking is actually a scenic overlook just east of the park and lighthouse. The lighthouse is not noted on the map nor is the "Fisherman's access" scenic overlook but once there, they are both hard to miss. If you were to leave the park driving east, the next right (1/4 mile) will be the access and parking. As you get close expect to make a few "U" turns, because if you miss the turn off, which is very easy, the road is divided and you'll have to go on to the next opening in the divided road "U" turn and come back around. Any difficulties with This direction process feel free to email me for further clarification. Your choice on routing will depend on where you're coming from, your preference for surface streets or freeways, most direct route or simplest route. You'll see what I mean. I would encourage anyone to join us who can handle the rock beach launch and is interested in rock gardening. It is entirely possible to safely watch and learn others do more advanced play boating while still being very close in and 20 feet away. The general MO is to stay as close to the break zone (you will need to be comfortable here) and rocks as the swell SAFELY allows, from there it is up to each to decide the level of "play". No, we will not just hang in the break zone and get beat up unless we decide to surf a spot. Breaking waves in close proximity to rocks is not desirable. Or healthy. The swell flowing in, around and up and down, around rocks is. Play can be as simple and safe as letting the swell take you in and bow rudder your way around a rock or boulder, then let the swell suck you back out or ride swells up and over rocks for a good drop on the other side. And then there is Steve Brown's all time favorite........yes...The Big POOL. This will not be a paddle about covering distance. It will be about playing in or learning to play in and or around as many features as is entertaining. If we find an interesting feature we will take turns taking advantage of that feature and then move on to the next. In river boating terms that is play boating. Work a spot taking turns, then move to the next. Or proceed single file through a series of maneuvers. If you want to get your heart rate up paddling fast and far, this paddle is not for you. In fact, do not come if that's what you want. You won't be happy. I have spent hours and gone no farther than 3 miles and a great time. This where the bow rudders, draw strokes, bracing etc. are absolutely functional and get used constantly. If you want to get your heart rate up with a little sport and technical challenge then please join us. Support and assistance gladly given to any that are interested and can handle the launch. No pressure on anyone to do anything other than paddle the plan mentioned here. Oh uh.keep in mind the launch when you think of bringing your glass boat. Not saying don't bring it...just know it will get .some texture. Any questions about this paddle or about suitability for this paddle feel free to email me or Steve. macgrzly at pacbell.net. We'll have this GP stroke clinic on Sunday, April 13th, 9-11am at Alamitos Bay. Never saw those before. "Garden Party" I like that terminology. It will be similar but better. More dramatic with cliffs and pools and more variety. I haven't seen your Delfin so I'm not sure what it's all about but if it's a surf boat they tend to be notoriously unstable and twitchy unless moving at a certain speed on a wave. It sounds a little bit bigger than most surf boats so maybe it's more stable? What do you think? How stable is it just sitting there? I have a couple surf boats that are great fun but ridiculously unstable just floating. Dedicated surf boats are entirely dependent on speed for stability. So I would say if it's stable stationary then you may prefer that over your long glass boat. The open deck may be an advantage also should an OOBE (out of boat experience) occur. It would then just be an off boat experience and easily remedied. I expect OOBE's to occur by the way and maybe me. If you are at all interested in coming, still come with either, you'll just have to adjust accordingly. I'm sure you'll be entertained. As for the launches and landings we can probably help the glass boat people with people holding the boat floating for launches and catching the boat for landings. Swell will determine the practicality of that of course. I don't want to sugar coat anything though, glass boats will more than likely get scratched and the owner will have to access how that will affect their participation and pleasure. So Bob McMurray and I have organized an informal clinic on how to perform the forward stroke and some maneuvering strokes with the Greenland paddle. We'll have this GP stroke clinic on Sunday, April 13th, 9-11am at Alamitos Bay. Directions are at: http://www.ckf. org/putins/putin_details.asp?putinid=1 If you'd like to attend, bring a kayak, PFD, and Greenland paddle. If you don't have a Greenland paddle, send out a email to the group, and maybe someone will be able to bring one for you to borrow. The plan is to stay dry, but all kayakers attending should know how and be experienced at performing wet exits and be responsible for his or her own safety. I like that terminology. It will be similar but better. More dramatic with cliffs and pools and more variety. I haven?t seen your Delfin so I?m not sure what it?s all about but if it?s a surf boat they tend to be notoriously unstable and twitchy unless moving at a certain speed on a wave. It sounds a little bit bigger than most surf boats so maybe it?s more stable? What do you think? How stable is it just sitting there? I have a couple surf boats that are great fun but ridiculously unstable just floating. Dedicated surf boats are entirely dependent on speed for stability. So I would say if it?s stable stationary then you may prefer that over your long glass boat. The open deck may be an advantage also should an OOBE (out of boat experience) occur. It would then just be an off boat experience and easily remedied. I expect OOBE?s to occur by the way and maybe me. If you are at all interested in coming, still come with either, you ?ll just have to adjust accordingly. I?m sure you?ll be entertained. As for the launches and landings we can probably help the glass boat people with people holding the boat floating for launches and catching the boat for landings. Swell will determine the practicality of that of course. I don?t want to sugar coat anything though, glass boats will more than likely get scratched and the owner will have to access how that will affect their participation and pleasure. When I woke up this morning, I figured that with a 2-4 foot surf forecast, the surf would be a bit too small at San Onofre, allowing me to still get a parking space at my arrival time of around 8am. \When I arrived, there was plenty of parking, and the surf was a small and easy 3 feet, perfect for surfing my 17 1/2 foot long Point Bennett. Only a few other people (stand-up board surfers) were in the kayak area, so I had pretty much every wave I wanted to myself. The small surf was great for long rides and practicing down wave edging and sweep turns to get turned around. I hadn't rolled in three months, so I practiced some sweep, reverse sweep, and storm rolls, and chest and back sculling. Everything seemed in place. After 1 1/2 hours, the surf slowed down some, so I went for a paddle up to San Mateo Point. I passed the famous Trestles surfing area along the way and remembered board surfing there in the late 1980's. Past the point, I landed for a break through some beach break where there was more swell exposure. From there I had a view of the San Clemente Pier and Dana Point. As I arrived back at San Onofre, the surf seemed bigger, and some nice 4 foot sets came in. I could feel I was a lot more tired now, but I took in about 5 more long rides before landing. On the beach, I relaxed on the tailgate of my truck, and for lunch I ate a banana and Roll or Drown Square, and drank a thermos of green tea. I also met Steve from Fort Bragg, CA, who had been kayaking in Baja for three months and was on his way back home. He was wanting to move permanently to Baja for the 60 cent tacos and nice people. He knew a bunch of the BASK members from the bay area. I managed to demonstrate my exquisite timimg by hitting ever breaker on my way out. The sea was a little choppy with the predicted swells and wind a reality. We head south for about 1.5 hours watching the offshore breakers and ground swell as to not get caught. As it was the underlying reefs and rocks left a definite footprint on the surface. Turning back the wind and south swell was at our backs. We paddled towards the shore at the "caves" but elected to practice some rolls and towing rather than let risk the shallow water and exposed rocks to our composite boats. At the shores we had an easy landing though the swell had picked up. The long sloping beach and haystacking 3-5' surf made it fun to navigate inside the surf zone paddling parallel to the beach with a little bracing practice as the breaking waves hit. Another great day on the water... Message-ID: <847868.87028.qm@web83203.mail.mud.yahoo.com> The CKF Fest is a one-day event -- no camping. It is held at Los Alamitos Bay in Long Beach. This is a great spot, right on the beach, with parking close by and hoses and facilities to wash your kayak off after the fun. People usually begin arriving early in the morning to get a non-metered parking space on the street. Those fill up quickly, and then you have to park at a meter in the beach parking lot, and feed the meter quarters periodically throughout the day. This is not a problem, as the parking lot is right next to where we'll be, as long as you keep track of the time. This is a pretty laid-back day. Leisurely short paddle around the Naples area of Long Beach (protected waters), chance to sell or buy used gear that other members bring, lunch (used to be potluck, apparently we may get it catered this year), sitting around on beach chairs talking, watching people paddle, etc. In past years there have been events like a pie-eating contest (the first to finish eating then jumped in their kayak to do a quick lap in the bay; first back to shore was a winner) and a kayak tug-of war with teams. Sometimes Steve Wilson and son provide a few songs. Usually our honored Prez gives a speech. Don't know what the activities will be this year. This is a very different event from the kayak symposium in San Diego. The Fest is geared toward getting to know other CKF members in a relaxed setting, not taking classes or learning skills. You can participate in as many or as few of the activities as you want. We're usually done by 3 or 4 in the afternoon. Hope this helps until Steve can post a link. Like you, I always felt that way in the past when Len was coordinating things. What I didn't know and I attempted to alert everybody to with my "Save the Date" email that I sent out, was that the City of Long Beach, which has to issue us a permit to use the beach, works in their own time. At the beginning of the year, we submitted several dates to the city and asked them to issue us a permit for one of them. It took until today for them to give us a final go-ahead. There isn't a web site for the FEST. It is not like the Symposium that we just had in San Diego. It's more along the lines of just one big "Paddle Fest" where many of the club members get to meet other members they don't usually get to see. We hold it at Long Beach because that seems to be the central geographic point of the club. After all, the bulk of our membership comes from the area between San Diego and Santa Barbara. There are no camping spots because this is a day affair only. There is some free parking on the street, but those spots fill early because we are not the only ones that use Alamitos Bay. It's a popular location. That's why the suggestion to bring quarters. If anybody can suggest a better location to hold the FEST in the future, the Board is all ears. Even better if you can coordinate getting the required permits. Date wise, we get limited by the Symposium in March, Easter and Passover, Cinqo de Maya, and spring break. We could hold it in the winter, but many of our members don't paddle in colder weather. We also have to avoid the Southland Kayak Center Expo dates and REI's demo days. When you combine that with all of the other organizations looking to hold things on the bay, you can see how we get limited. As plans get firmed up even more, we'll be keeping you informed via this email list, and even though Lee Shurie moved into a new house over the weekend, he'll still be finding time between unpacking to keep the info on the web site up to date. Hope to see you there, Steve From: info-bounces at list.ckf.org [mailto:info-bounces at list.ckf.org] On Behalf Of Scott Dunn Sent: Monday, April 07, 2008 4:36 PM To: 'CKF Discussions' Subject: Re: [CKF Info] CKF Fest---The Excitement Begins!!! Well before the crack of dawn, Dublin Dave arrived to load up my Explorer on his Ford Explorer. We were on the road to Channel Islands Harbor at 03:30 AM. After a brief hunt for the boat ramp, we had our boats loaded and ready to go by 7:00 AM. The first fly in the ointment presented itself. The sign on the parking lot pay box read, "Cars without trailers will be cited." I called up the Harbor Master on VHF channel 12 and he suggested we park in the opposite lot to avoid confusion. Voila! The VHF radio worked. Just to be on the safe side, we paddled to Gina. The workers, if there were any, were still in the sack. However the seals on the buoy were happy to see us. After a brief rest and a SPOT OK transmission we were on our way to the Anacapa landing cove. About a mile out, three Orcas (a.k.a. Killer Whales) crossed our bow. There was no mistake on the identification of this whale species as the dorsal fins were easily spotted. Around 10:30 AM we arrived at the landing cove. The ranger had just received his provisions from the CI park boat and was on the dock. He wasn't the most talkative ranger we had ever met, but he was able to utter a few questions. "Where did you come from?" "Have you ever been here before?" and lastly, "How are you going to get your boats up on the dock." Looking up at the davit, we noticed it was missing the block and tackle. The second fly in the ointment just landed. Ranger Bob, as we later named him, wasn't about to let us use the National Park Service hoist, but was more than helpful by throwing us a rope. Ranger Bob disappeared and was never to be seen again. So to make a miserable story less miserable, I'll spare the details on how we got the boats up on the dock. Basically, we unloaded the boats and muscled my boat up with the rope. Just as we had all the gear out of Dave's boat, the Island Packer boat arrived and pulled Dave's boat onto the stern, walked it to the bow, and guided it onto the dock. After kissing all the female crew members and shaking hands with the captain we felt a sense of relief. Island Packer were our saviors. Admittedly, my drysuit was a little overkill on the crossing and I did a few sculling braces to cool off. But, when we were unloading boats, I spent a lot of time in the water and was toasty warm. Ask Dave how cold the water was. A hatch cover got ripped from it's tether and Dave had to dive for it. P. S. Drysuits aren't compatible with diving. That was my excuse. With the exception of a few sprinkles, our stay on Anacapa was perfect. The coreopsis were in full bloom and the Western gulls were getting their nesting sites ready for the big event. Maybe ranger Bob was in hiding but as far as we could figure, we were the only inhabitants on the island. We drank some of our wine to lighten our load for our Anacapa Passage crossing planned for the next day. The crack of dawn had long passed as we loaded our boats and lowered them into the water. Launching was far easier than hoisting those boats onto the dock. We circumnavigated the island clockwise or around the back side. Dave was feeling a tad under the weather, possibly from contaminated drinking water. In the middle of the channel we were divided on whether to go to Scorpion or Smugglers. After looking at Dumpy square in the eyes, I think we should have gone on to Scorpion. No problems landing at Smugglers. We took a lunch break and then noticed that Dumpy had raised its ugly head. Hmmmm... How are we going to get off this beach? The thought of camping at Smugglers actually crossed our minds. Being able to count to ten, I noticed the sets seemed to be grouped in seven with about a five minute lull. That theory worked and Dave launched with no problems. Getting those fully loaded boat off the beach with no help was not an easy task and I almost exceeded my five minute window. We made it! As we rounded San Pedro point we were met by a 15 knot wind and we slugged our way to Scorpion. It was late afternoon when we landed and by the time we set up camp it was dinner time. Barb came over the next day to resupply our provisions. We kicked around Scorpion for the day and put Barb on the 4 PM boat. Saturday it was blowing hard so Dave and I practiced rolls and rescues. Our original plan was to paddle back to Anacapa on Sunday but with a broken davit we scrapped that plan. The next option was to paddle back to CI Harbor but my sorry ass likes the shorter distance. We made a reservation with Island Packers and returned on the Sunday noon boat. The final fly landed in the ointment. Our gracious CKF Pres, Steve Holtzman, met us at Ventura and shuttled Dave back to CI Harbor to pick up his car. Ah! As I was waiting for Dave, our blue and yellow Explorers were picture perfect contrasting with the green lawn. The picture would have been complete with my Superior carbon Greenland paddle and Dave's euro paddle lying across the decks. Island Packers forgot to bring them out of the hold and they were long gone. We had to wait for three hour for the boat to return. They eased our pain with two free tickets to Anacapa/Santa Cruz good for two years. Let's all plan a "fix the davit" paddle. All it needs is a block and tackle and some line. Haven't kayaked since the Symposium, so I was a bit rusty! Spent the week preparing to and then laying 1300 sqft of sod in my front yard, so it's not like I was goldbricking. But after all that real work, I was ready for a soak. Ken had his pencil-lead boat and decided to bring his Superior pencil-lead GP to accessorize. Barb brought her Strosaker GP as well. I was loaded fer baar (BAR?) with my GP stuck to my front deck, my Redondo Ridgeback in my hands and a Strosaker canoe paddle filling out the rear. I let K&B determine the destination, so you can't blame me for only paddling as far as BAR. Barb has a bit of a time keeping up with her GP, so I was able to go for a look see behind the arch, but the low tide prevailed. Ken practiced some rolls farther out while Barb warned him that the current was headed for a couple large rocks. As spouses sometimes do, he ignored her. We chatted on the paddle back and landed on a beach in the harbor before starting a bit of rolling practice. I'd not had any success rolling with the Red Ridge, but hadn't really tried since I became more proficient at rolling. I missed my first try, but then was able to do my next few with an extended paddle. Ken looked good rolling with his GP until he tried his off side and just couldn't make it up without switching over to his good side. I broke out the canoe paddle to see if I could have any success, but couldn't find enough bite to make it up. Switching to my GP gave me the best rolls of the day, although a couple tries with Ken's Superior were also really nice. We headed back after our short jaunt and hit an obscure coffee joint for a bit more chatting. It was nice to spend some time on and under the water after my absence and with my green lawn all in can plan a bit more paddling for next week. I see a couple of dolphins followed by a sea lion closer to shore heading in the opposite direction. My first thought was how cute, the sea lion?s hanging out with the dolphins. Then the sea lion sees me and immediately changes direction, heading straight for me with chest thrust forward and head held high. Damn!?! I change my course to one I hope the sea lion will find less threatening. The sea lion submerges. I picture it speeding for me, a furry torpedo, intent on my destruction. I don?t really believe it?s going to attack me but based on the behavior so far I can?t help but prepare myself for I?m not quite sure what probably nothing. And that?s what happened. Nothing. But I did hear a breath being drawn astern a couple of times and concluded I was being escorted out of the sea lions territory just like the dolphins before me. Leaving my sea lion escort behind I continue my paddle and notice a pair of dolphins swimming in the same direction as the last two but further out to sea. I see a couple of more off to my left. It?s not uncommon to see dolphins here. But it?s uncommon enough, and the animals are marvelous enough, to make each sighting a thrill. Then suddenly a lone dolphin surfaced barely a paddle length away. So close it startled me. But by executing a micro-quick change of expression, when I realized it was just a dolphin up for air, I was able to squeak out ?hey buddy? instead of whatever kind of scream had been in the course of erupting from deep down in my gut. Admittedly the dolphin gave me a bit of a start. But when that dolphin heard the sound of my voice saying ?hey buddy? it literally scared it so bad it looked like it wanted to jump right out of its skin. It was like I had snuck up behind it and yelled BOO! That poor thing wanted to be somewhere else NOW. I laughed out loud! I?m sorry but it was funny. I always had the impression you couldn?t sneak up on a dolphin. Dolphins have the super duper sonar that can detect a hick-up from an anchovy fifty miles away. Well this particular dolphin wasn?t paying attention. I spooked it good. Or maybe he was hearing from some of his buddies to watch out for this aggressive sea lion? Just as he gets news of some crazy sea lion there I am saying ?hey buddy? right behind his left ear. That was two weeks ago. Then a couple of days ago I?m heading back to Newport Harbor after a long paddle when I see a dolphin surface for a breath, about fifty yards away, heading directly towards me. I?m thinking I might, be about where it will surface for its next breath. So you would think when that is exactly what happened I would be ready. But it surfaced so close I let out a gasp and just like last time, scared the hell out of the poor dolphin. I have paddled a lot of years without scaring a single dolphin. Lately I seem to be terrorizing the neighborhood. Read Shoemaker __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! You're right, surprising a dolphin close to you, twice in a row, is rare. Could it be that the dolphins are being affected by some localized bacteria, virus or other single-celled creatures? Maybe their hearing has been adversely affected by sonar or other human-generated marine noise. Then again, they may just be distracted, by territorial sea lions or even by something you may not have seen. This time of year adult female great white sharks come relatively close to shore to give birth, perhaps that was a factor? I'd be curious to hear if anyone else is having similar encounters. I myself have been off the water now for close to two months, due to family commitments, but I will be returning to the water within the next couple of weeks. That's what I nearly had Sunday afternoon on my way home from the ocean. I stopped at a gas station to use the restroom. While inside, I heard some noise outside but didn't think much about it. When I came out I saw my hand-crafted* Greenland Kayak, Siqiniq, dangling off the side of my car, The rear roof rack had been twisted and torn from my roof. The bow of my boat was bent 45 degrees and it was obvious the stem board was broken. Apparently a truck had hit my boat and then had driven off. I talked with the gas station attendant but he had seen nothing and there were no surveillance cameras. What other damage there might be... I was afraid to look. Siqiniq
