Kayakers,

I'm sorry to not post a paddle for this weekend, but I couldn't decide what I was going to do till this morning. When I woke up this morning, I figured that with a 2-4 foot surf forecast, the surf would be a bit too small at San Onofre, allowing me to still get a parking space at my arrival time of around 8am.

\When I arrived, there was plenty of parking, and the surf was a small and easy 3 feet, perfect for surfing my 17 1/2 foot long Point Bennett. Only a few other people (stand-up board surfers) were in the kayak area, so I had pretty much every wave I wanted to myself. The small surf was great for long rides and practicing down wave edging and sweep turns to get turned around. I hadn't rolled in three months, so I practiced some sweep, reverse sweep, and storm rolls, and chest and back sculling. Everything seemed in place.

After 1 1/2 hours, the surf slowed down some, so I went for a paddle up to San Mateo Point. I passed the famous Trestles surfing area along the way and remembered board surfing there in the late 1980's. Past the point, I landed for a break through some beach break where there was more swell exposure. From there I had a view of the San Clemente Pier and Dana Point.

As I arrived back at San Onofre, the surf seemed bigger, and some nice 4 foot sets came in. I could feel I was a lot more tired now, but I took in about 5 more long rides before landing.

On the beach, I relaxed on the tailgate of my truck, and for lunch I ate a banana and Roll or Drown Square, and drank a thermos of green tea. I also met Steve from Fort Bragg, CA, who had been kayaking in Baja for three months and was on his way back home. He was wanting to move permanently to Baja for the 60 cent tacos and nice people. He knew a bunch of the BASK members from the bay area.
