Kayakers,

This fire relief concert has taken on a life of it's own. I have five bands lined up. With amazing support from the local community, the fire Department, and businesses. Thanks Chuck your heart is in the right place. So many people have come forth to help and donate. The CKF membership does not need to be involved as a group. If anyone wants to donate personally let me know and I'll send you the address for the fire relief fund we have set up for the family.

Thanks,

Steve W

Perhaps we could do a fundraiser in conjunction with Fest.

Maybe we could encourage everybody to double their membership fee for this year, only, with the overage to go to these folks.

 Great trip report Lee,

The PV paddle was everything I had hoped for except I was not there.

The Fire Relief concert is set for Sunday 4/27, 4 to 10 PM at The Buffalo Inn in Upland. The outpouring of support and offers of help from all of my kayak friends has been fantastic. What an incredible group of people you all are. I have not had time to answer any one.

 Thank you all,

 Steve

After the carry down to the launch area a river paddler named Nori from West Virginia arrived. He made haste to join us and soon the four of us had safely launched from among the large boulders at the shoreline. The swells had been forecast at 5 to 7 feet so it promised to be a challenging and exciting day. Some of the normal areas were closed off to us because of the large sets which came in regularly, but other places became more energized.

We headed east along the coast as Jack led us through some of his favorite spots. He had mentioned he likes to stay as close-in as possible so he can stay in touch with the dynamics of the day. Close in meant close in! We had to keep a close eye out to sea and every five or ten minutes we charged into the waves to the cry of "incoming!". It kept us on our toes.

We found some great spots to play and spent time taking turns going over and through the rocks. We were in no hurry to get anywhere and there were so many spots beckoning us to play! Jack showed us a lot of tricks and made them look easy. George was as solid and powerful as ever, and Nori turned out to be a very good paddler.

Eventually we made it down to the east end of Abalone Cove where there was a fabulous left break. We all surfed there for a while, and Nori especially loved it. He was all grins. When we were all tired from having so much fun we landed for a short break.

After the break we headed a bit farther east around Portuguese Point and found some exciting places to play. There were spots where Jack could be seen going up and down 10 or 12 feet at a time amid the crashing spray and foam. He looked perfectly at home among all that chaos. George and I were in slightly longer boats than Jack and Nori (11 ft) but we found they did a great job in the wild water too.

The return trip was more of the same. We hugged the shoreline and explored every feature worth peeking into. I got dumped a few times in shallow spots but was always able to roll up.

By the time we got back to our landing spot we were all pretty tired. It had been 4-1/2 hours of constant action. With the larger than normal swells, the landing spot was a bit tricky. The shoreline was steep and rocky, and there were boulders in the water just off shore. Nevertheless we all made it in safely and prepped for the climb back up to the parking lot. At the end of the climb we all knew we'd sleep well tonight. We were spent. We were also grinning from ear to ear because it had been such a fun day on the water.

Thanks Jack for organizing and leading. Thanks Steve W. for having the idea. Hope you can make the next one.

 Best,
   Lee
