This time it was turn to Luis Sierra and Jose Rivera. Luis is a promoter of kayak racing and has been involved in the National Standards, educated his son to become a champion in Slalom and WW kayaking. Luis also paddles a canoe kayak converted canoe on his knees, according to the traditional Olympic class. Jose Rivera is the enthusiastic father of my co-organizer colleague and the cook, or better said gourmet in our expeditions. He does not paddle but gives us as much happiness. We had 36 competitors, three in doubles. Following CKF and Paddlewise suggestions we divided the boats in three categories Sea Kayak, Fast Sea Kayak and Very fast Sea Kayak, using the l/w ratio. We also made divisions by age. So, as you may guess almost everybody got a trophy and happiness was all around. http://outdoors.webshots.com/album/563977906HwPesT http://community.webshots.com/user/cayucochief We had a great competition and kayakers from far cities in the country showed up to compete and to reinforce previous friendship links from previous expeditions. Fastest competitor made 16.9 km in 1 55' 27", moving against low to medium tidal incoming current. We had a great time and those 20 ingredient hamburgers of George's where to die for. We got there around 5:30 and unloaded our boats and proceeded to start the feast with Paula's ceveiche and shrimp cocktails for hors devourers. George was tending the burgers and chicken on the grill while carol was running around making sure that everyone had plenty to eat. After gorging ourselves with food and stories, we then had desert! We had some time to digest a little before the dock launchings to paddle over to view the fireworks display. I have to say that we had plenty of help with both the launching and landings. I really appreciated the hand everyone was lending especially helping Debbie. This was her first dock launching and she was very apprehensive. Everything went smoothly. We proceeded to paddle out in to the main channel over by one of the Yacht Clubs to view the display. George made the comment that he had not seen so many water craft out at the same time since the Christmas Boat parade. We rafted up along side a dock and viewed the 30 minute display of pyrotechnics. We had a front row seat for the display. After the display we paddled back to George and Carol's to land our boats. George demonstrated his PFD snatch method of helping one out of their boats. Before you could start to extend your legs to lift out of the boat, George grabbed a hold of your PFD and whoosh you were on the dock. We cleaned up and loaded our boats and bid fair well to everyone as we prepared for our 2 hour journey home. Debbie had to work on Saturday so we did not stay over locally. We had a great time with good food and even better friends. Those in attendance: Steve Holtzman, Wes and Debbie, Paula Chavez, Pat Martin, Heather Martin, Chris Wood, George and Carol Miller, Jonathan Felix, Les, Sally, David and Stephanie. Also hiding up stairs under the bed, George and Carol's cat. She came out at the end to look around. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... As you know, we have negotiated a larger club discount than what we previously had with Outdoorplay.com (it's shown on our member's only pages under discounts), BUT.... If you paid your dues on time, and the club records show that you were paid as of last week, you should have either received a gift certificate to Outdoorplay.com. So if you haven't sent in your dues yet, you might want to do so ASAP. You never know what goodie you'll miss out on this week. Wes and Debbie are having our mail forwarded to them every week and are processing the applications as soon as they get them, so there's no excuses. Send your checks to Wes and find out what other benefits CKF membership can bring. Steve -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Peter O?Sullivan, Lee Shurie, John Peterson, Chris Wood, Robert Tongen, Taylor Burch, Mary Looby, John Ernst, Julianne W., Maryke & Dick Brannin, George & Carol Miller, & myself, Bev Waldron. We all headed out to the pond with Chris towing his surf boat. Some of us stayed with Peter while others worked on their own practice & rescue skills. First Peter had us do wet exits and reentry?s giving us suggestions, guidance and demos. Robert was right there helping us with these reentry?s and offering encouragement. Mary, a very proficient paddler, had her brand new Suka and was doing very smooth reentry?s even though this boat had a different personality than her previous boat. Peter helped Maryke do an underwater reentry and roll. With his patience and tips she did it!! This was a first for her and we were all excited about this. Dick has been working on his roll with a paddle float and with Peters help today he now can now do a real roll. He was a very happy man!!! Congratulations Dick We then progressed to assisted rescues. Maryke and I were successful with the bow-toggle roll up, ( I am not sure what this maneuver is really called). I have been practicing this a lot with anyone who would loan me their bow. But today was the first time I was able to come back up. It was easy if you just watched the sky. Then we did bow rescues, with demos from Peter. We all did well and had a lot of fun with these. Robert stayed right with us to offer help & assistance the whole time. Chris and John E helped Julianne with her reentries, which she is very comfortable with. Later we all took a beach break. At this time Chris gave us some bracing practice. He simulated a breaking wave hitting our side by using a webbing he wrapped around our boats. Then he would pull us quickly causing our boat to nearly capsize if we didn?t brace. It was realistic and fun. Thanks Chris for standing in the cold water, and being a ?pretend? wave. We then returned to the water for some additional practice and review. After a bit some of us went back to the launch, some did a little more practice & a short paddle and the rest of the group went for some surf play. Everyone had a fun time and learned a new skill or improved upon an existing skill. We then went to Dadio?s and shared our experiences of the day. Mary said, in essence, ?One of the nice things about kayaking is that as soon as you reach one level it opens up another level, always presenting a new challenge.? Doesn't sound like a friendly disease. Apparently they need a place to stay along the Newport Beach area so if anyone is willing to share their house, apt.... I also posted my mailing address for the simple reason that if you decide to present them with a donation you can do so through me. Naturally you can make a donation to the below listed foundation or to them directly. I have received a couple envelopes so far but will not open them until the Otter's arrival. I am sure they will appreciate anything you send their way. Thanks again, billy http://www.vasculitisfoundation.org/rogueotters ........................................................................ ........................................................................ ........................................................................ ........................................................................ ....... All, I think you all received the email from the "Rogue Otters" who are paddling from San Francisco to Sand Diego as a benefit to their friend who recently passed away from a horrible blood disease. (I lost the original email so I can't give you the name of the disease) They are looking for help along the way and having been one who went though a tough battle of my own I understand the importance of giving back and helping out those in need. In response my wife and I are giving them shelter in our home for a night with a nice meal from our BBQ and a couple bucks for the fund. I am wondering if we could all pitch in, only if you want to, to help out. I have volunteered to help them and thought that if any one wanted to donate some spare change you could send it to me and I will surprise them on CKF's behalf or on your own personal behalf's. I can work with them re: receipts etc. if you like...I just want to help. Naturally I hope I hope am not imposing and if there are any legal ramifications to this I don't want to know, I just want to help. Any input would be great. I had a complete blast shooting these guys as they churned up some good water! This was my first foray into rock gardening and though I only captured it on media cards it was great to live the experience through them. Talk about talented paddlers! I have to admit that it was a tough act to keep up with these guys with my kayak loaded with gear and sportin' the "oil cans". (My custom built pontoon contraption.) I suddenly realized that I would be pushing a lot more water than normal due to this fine item and by days end I was worn out! It was tough trying to predict which way the paddles were going to go. I had to back up and go forward, slide sideways...all the while trying to keep my on the action and incoming waves. (Thanks for the wave warning Mark!) What a blast! As for the hill... I visited the site the weekend before so I knew what I was getting into. Walking down and up the hill with no gear seemed quite easy but with a 60lb. kayak loaded with gear trying to get down was questionable at best. After the paddle we had to go back up and with the help of a few good men and some camels we made it! Next time I'm bringing my own "tow rope system" like they use at ski resorts! Krikey! Again, I wish to thank Jack for hosting and serving the "tea", Lee for his magic trick, George for his patience, Mark for his humor and Steve for finding good parking spots amongst the rocks! There were 14 of us who showed up at Hobie Beach this morning. First Peter had us do wet exits and?reentry?s giving us suggestions, guidance and demos. Robert was right there helping us with these reentry?s and offering encouragement. Mary, a very proficient paddler, had her brand new Suka??and?was? doing very smooth? reentry?s even though this boat had a different personality than her previous boat. Peter helped Maryke do an underwater reentry and roll. With his patience and tips she? did it!! This was a first for her and we were all excited about this. Dick has been working on his roll? with a paddle float and with Peters help today he now can now do a real roll. We all did well?and?had a lot of fun with these. Robert stayed right with us to offer help & assistance the whole time. Chris and?John E helped Julianne? with her reentries, which she is very comfortable with. Later we all took a beach break. At this time Chris gave us some bracing practice. He simulated a breaking wave hitting our side by using a webbing he wrapped around our boats. Then he would pull us quickly causing our boat?to nearly capsize if we didn?t brace. It was realistic and fun. Thanks Chris for standing in the cold water, and being a ?pretend? wave. We then returned to the water for some additional practice and review. After a bit some of us went back to the launch, some did a little more practice & a short paddle and the rest of the group went for some surf play.? Everyone had a fun time and learned a new skill or improved upon an existing skill.? We then went to Dadio?s and shared our experiences of the day.? Mary said, in essence,? ?One of the nice things about kayaking is that as soon as you reach one level it opens up another level, always presenting a new challenge.?? Thank you again Peter and all who helped us develop skills and confidence in a fun atmosphere. Who's to say he wasn't at least partly responsible for our excellent adventure! It was 4:45am when I pulled up in line behind Duane Strosaker at our launch site at Cabrillo Beach and the adventure started quickly. Behind me, Steve Wilson and Bob McMurray completed our group, or did they! The gate was to be opened late to allow for LAPD to be on hand to check for contraband on this Independence Day launch. As we waited a young man, named Peter I believe, came up and asked me where we were headed. I told him Catalina was our goal and he went on to ask me if I knew of this guy named Duane Strosaker! He'd been reading about his Catalina adventures and was planning to head there as well! We introduced he who needs no introduction and he waylaid a passerby to get a photo of himself and Duane and deigned to let us in on group shot. Not the first time I seemed to have lucked into Duane's fame! We were about to launch and it turned out that Peter and his friend had their SOTs ready to go as well. I think they were hoping to tag along with us, but I think Duane explained we were somewhat of a closed group. He told them they were welcome to follow us, but they'd be on their own. We made a quick launch and as we slipped into the misty horizon, I'm afraid we saw Peter's group having a bit of trouble in the surf and we hoped them well on their journey This was my first paddle in a loaded kayak and despite my nerves, my stomach was nice enough to give me the morning off!. Heading out through the waves through what was at best a three footer, it was interesting how the bow plowed right through. Once underway my newbie overloaded boat didn't really seem too hard to keep up to speed and I was glad to be under way. Conditions were great and Duane's crossing procedures seemed to make the crossing go quickly and at about an hour out from Catalina, Duane let me lead the group on in to Lava Rock Beach. We had some boat campers at the site who were taking up most of the beach, but they gladly rearranged things to give us some room above the tide line. Free spirit that I am, I chose a small, secluded patch of sand for my tent away from the others. Heck, I borrowed the tent, who cares about high tide lines! We had landed at 12:15 for a 5 hour and 45 minute crossing and we were in for the night, so we hunkered in by the slight shade of the cliff to rest an eat and chat about the crossing. With the giant cliffs, it seemed natural to think we'd get some shade, but the sun gave us no quarter, so we searched for shade where we could find it and alternately resorted to the cool ocean water for the ultimate cool down. We were happy for the sunset and the chance to sit through the cool evening. Our boating neighbors left for some evening fishing, but expressed concern before they left about my tent site being below the waterline, but Duane felt I was safe and besides, it wasn't his tent either! We all slept well, although I woke to the neighbors shooting off a couple Aerial fireworks from their boat and notice the larger waves crashing on the sand and the water making its way up to my tent. On top of a six inch air mattress, I was safe, but the sand all around my tent was wet in the morning and I was glad I'd tied my kayak up! In the morning, we all launched separately for the paddle to Twin Harbors carrying our used WagBags on our poop decks. I took my time enjoying my first exposure to the Catalina coastline. The crystal waters clearly showed the alternate world beneath my kayak and there were plenty of rocks to play around and scrape more gelcoat off my hull. Three of us met up inside a cave where Steve had stopped to rest in the shade and we all traversed a narrow tunnel out, glad for the calm sea state. We met up with Duane and continued on to town.

A nice surprise at Two Harbors was to be greeted at the cantina by Dave Houser. He supped with us an treated us to a tour of his hoity toity Yacht club where if your blood is the right shade of aquamarine, after about a ten year wait list you can join and stay in a nifty little room in the converted civil war barracks house. He invited us to a evening rib-roast, but it was too late for us so we hung out for a while enjoying the local bikini clad fauna. Trying to conserve my energy for the next day's crossing, I paddled home alone while the other three hugged the coast looking for more excitement. For our final night, we enjoyed a much cooler evening. The daemon rum nearly had Steve washed up on a rocky shoal, but he managed to survive long enough to down most of three MREs. Apparently alcohol makes them very tasty! Most enjoyed a second dinner when our neighbors offered us some of their dinner and Duane said he really enjoyed the ribs and something that was either a potato or corn on the cob! Yeah, alcohol will do that to you! We had a beautiful sunset and another fire works show from Two Harbors way. Wave-Ra came to my assistance once more by weakening Duane's resolve for a 6am launch, making him cave in to the request for an extra hour. Once again I wondered about the crossing and how my two night bivouac would affect my paddling. But by my second hour on the water, things seemed fine and we settled into a nice pace. We stopped for a while to watch some dolphins and birds feasting on something in the water, but all we could see were floating fish scales. While I was in the lead, I spotted a shark that seemed to be following us, that Duane guessed was probably a 6 foot Blue shark. No man eater, but my first shark sighting at sea. We looked for blue whales, but despite the excellent conditions, came up empty. We paddled home under a dense cloud cover over a dead calm sea and hit the beach at Cabrillo in 5 hours and 15 minutes. It was a great trip and full of firsts for me. The conditions we enjoyed and the times we crossed in seemed great for a first timer. Some may chalk it up to luck, but it seems no coincidence that everywhere I went, Wave-Ra was leading on my bow. I think we owe him an offering, but sacrificial virgins aren't easy to come by these days! Message-ID: For those that read my Catalina trip report, you know that we met up with a fan of Duane's who was heading out for Catalina. It was somewhat of an awkward situation, as it seemed he and his friend would have liked to have been invited along with our group. I found it a bit surprising that someone who had read of some of Duane's exploits would think of being invited along last minute on the beach--the disparity between SOTs and sea kayaks not being even the major consideration! Talking about it later, we all agreed that plenty of young bucks could gut out the trip to Catalina especially under the conditions we had for our crossings-even in small SOTs. But anyone who belongs to CKF or reads our trip reports ought to come a way with the impression that getting to know your fellow paddlers is an important part of planning a trip--not to mention required safety gear! I hope Peter (if I got his name right) might read this and realize we weren't shunning him on some personal level and if he really appreciates Duane's accomplishments he might study a bit on what it takes to make a safe trip. It would have been nice for us to take the group under our wing, but there was no way for that to turn out good. We wondered/hoped the group had a safe passage, but we also hoped their immediate trouble in the surf maybe gave them pause to wonder if they were up to continue their planned trip. I hope they become members some day and come to appreciate the collective wisdom of our more experienced paddlers and put their knowledge to good use Mark www.sandmarks.net -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Someday I hope to follow in your wake! billy ________________________________ From: info-bounces at list.ckf.org [mailto:info-bounces at list.ckf.org] On Behalf Of Mark Sanders Sent: Tuesday, July 08, 2008 1:18 PM To: 'CKF Discussions' Cc: PaddleWise Subject: [CKF Info] Ignoring a Fellow Crosser: any thoughts? For those that read my Catalina trip report, you know that we met up with a fan of Duane's who was heading out for Catalina. I hope they become members some day and come to appreciate the collective wisdom of our more experienced paddlers and put their knowledge to good use Mark www.sandmarks.net -------------------------------------------------------- This message (including any attachments) is only for the use of the person(s) for whom it is intended. The area was under a gale warning but that didn't stop Ken and Dave O'Connor from loading up their kayaks on the Island Packer boat. Cheryl and Barb opted for hiking on the island. The Island Packer boat left promptly at 8 AM with Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, and San Miguel hikers and campers. Our first stop was Scorpion to drop off the Santa Cruz folks. The captain took the back side of Santa Cruz for smoother waters for the leg to Santa Rosa. Seeing the back side of the island was a real treat for the adventurous foursome. But the nice smooth ride was about to end. As the boat rounded the west end of Santa Cruz, Neptune decided to make the trip interesting and the passengers on the bow got a good bath. Barb had her head in a bag most of the 20 minutes it took to make the passage to Santa Rosa. The boat arrived at the Bechers Bay pier and unloaded the Santa Rosa campers. There are 13 sites and the rangers said they were all booked except for 3. The campers gathered at the corrals to get the ranger orientation and the Island Packer boat departed with the San Miguel group. Ranger Mark said there was a possibility they wouldn't make it and asked everyone to hold the 3 open sites for the misfortunate ones who couldn't make it. Also, they would open up the Day Use area which didn't have any wind shelter. After the orientation, the foursome hiked a mile and a half to the campsite. Cheryl went into high speed mode and bagged two shelters. After the foursome put up their tents in 27 knot winds, the San Miguel campers arrived only to find all shelter occupied. Their boat had to turn around due to gale force winds. They had to put up in the Day Use area and needless to say, they were not happy campers. The kind hearted CKFers, offered up the use off of their sheltered picnic table to cook on. At 9 AM Saturday morning and after a windy night, ranger Catherine gathered everyone for a Lobo Canyon hike of about 9 mile. Lobo Canyon is a hike not to be missed if visiting Santa Rosa Island. It was late afternoon when the hikers returned and the wind was still howling. As the foursome prepared their dinners in the protection of the shelters, a young couple from the Day Use area came to join them. They talked of their harrowing night in the open Day Use area and how impossible it was to cook. Ken noticed the look of despair on their faces and brought out the Black Box wine. Soon all their woes seemed insignificant. The next day was spent beach hiking and a hike to Torrey Pines. There are only two places in the world, according to the ranger, that have Torrey pines and Santa Rosa Island is one of them. It was still too windy to kayak but NOAA weather radio was calling for a calmer Monday. Around midnight the winds abated and foursome awoke Monday to calm seas and fog. Dave and Ken headed for the water and Barb and Cheryl did some more hiking. Dave and Ken headed for Carrington Point where a large herd of seals and sea lions reside. Pea soup fog and breaking waves in a unknown area turned the two back to the pier. Those guys are really smart. Back at the pier, the two practiced rolls, rescues, and braces. The water wasn't exactly tropical temperature. After a fun day of hiking and kayaking is was time to get ready for the 3 PM boat departure. The boat ride back to Ventura included a peak into the famous Painted Cave. The ocean was calm and Barb was happy traveler. With the exception of the Painted Cave stop and the usual dolphin stop, the boat was the express boat directly from Santa Rosa to Ventura. by Ken Fry Trip pictures at _http://share.shutterfly.com/action/welcome?sid=8AbM27Fy5cN2JG_ (http://share.shutterfly.com/action/welcome?sid=8AbM27Fy5cN2JG&emid=sharshar&linkid=link5) **************Get the scoop on last night's hottest shows and the live music scene in your area - Check out TourTracker.com! Today was a Catalina wrap up paddle and much more fun! It was a warm day at home, so I didn't expect much from a paddle, but when we hit the water around 3pm, the wind had picked up and the sun was playing peek a boo. On the way out, I chatted with a couple SOTers who asked us if we were on on way to Catalina! I had to give them a brief recap of my weekend just to impress them! Outside the harbor, my favorite derelict sailboat was still moored nearby. The wind was kicking up the waves a bit; not what I'd expected on the day. Barb didn't join Ken today and I'm sure she would have been glad considering the conditions. The tide was high and I was hoping for some fun behind BAR, although I'd have to take it a bit easy, as I'd left my helmet at home. The waves at BAR weren't big, but they were a bit tricky. We made a few passes and I hung out a while inside the arch, but I didn't want to press my luck too much sans helmet. I was just nice to have a bit a texture mid July when things are usually rather hot and flat. There was just enough water for me to scoot over the rocks out the back way of BAR and Ken and I headed home close to shore. In front of Big Corona we checked out the couple boats I might someday consider home before finding our way back in the harbor. Despite the wind, we threw in a few rolls past Pirate's Cove. The water was rather nice and but for the wind we might have spent more time upside down. But we figured with our big paddles out of our way, there wasn't any reason not to take it easy and headed back to the high tide back at the Secret Beach to call it a day. It was nice to be back on the water with no important agenda pending and a fun way to spend a late afternoon on the water. This is an informal paddle and anyone with intermediate skills is welcome to join me. Those wanting to paddle shorter distances (Three Arches), whale watch or do a harbor paddle are welcome to join and paddle with me for a long as they want. Please note the following: 1) Surf launches and landings may be required. 2) Conditions can get rough so you should be comfortable paddling in rough conditions. 3) This is an informal paddle for experienced paddlers I will not try and hold the group together - those wanting to do their own thing are welcome to do so. Of course that means the group might become separated and paddlers should be comfortable paddling solo in challenging conditions and have the ability to do a solo rescue. This responsibility includes assessing your gear, skill level, and physical conditioning relative to conditions and location, as well as making decisions about what you will or will not do. Duane had called for an 8:30 launch from Dana Point and while I got there first, I was soon joined by Kathy and Henry Pilcher and Dennis Hyndman. Parking was scarce until the spaces parted to allow for Duane's last minute arrival! Soon we all had our cars ensconced near our launch site and were ready to hit the water. Paddling out the harbor, it seemed prime WH conditions. We head out under a sunny sky and by the time we closed on the end of the jetty, everyone was sweating in the heat!! We were all glad when after rounding the jetty, we found a nice ocean breeze to greet us. Conditions were a bit choppy though, so spotting the Blues wasn't going to be as easy as we hoped. We lost little time heading out to our usual hunting grounds. Plentiful whitecaps and an occasional breaking wave had us thinking whales were all around us. We took a couple small breaks and were just hanging out waiting for some excitement, when we were encouraged to see the Dolphin Safari tour heading right towards our location. They'd been having good luck spotting a couple Blues lately, so we figured they had the scoop. The DS boat headed off a bit west of us and seemed to stop to wait. We decided to nonchalantly try to weasel our way closer to their position. We headed off parallel to where they stopped and put a bit more distance between us and the coast. But they never seemed to find anything and soon headed out past our desired range for the day. We decided to hang out for half an hour and hope for the best. The breeze and the sun behind some misty clouds made conditions pleasant despite the choppy water. We all kind of drifted apart as we waited and kept that arrangement as we started paddling back to shore. Kathy and I were bad, as we started heading out straight for the jetty entrance, where the rest of the group looked like they were headed right into shore. We had a large chunk of ocean separating us, but I was hoping we'd corral the Blues right in between us. No such luck. We battled the chunky sea the way home. Off by ourselves, Kathy and I were startled by a couple dolphins that looped right in front of our bows. Then another pair came up to our side. We soon had dolphins popping up all around us heading in every direction! It was impossible to know how many, but being as they seemed to be all around us, I'd say there were at least ten. They followed us longer then either of us would have thought and then seemed to head towards the other group, so we hoped they'd get a show as well, but it wasn't the case. The boat traffic and chop got worse as usual the closer we got to the mouth of the harbor. Our bows were plowing through the surf, which I was glad for, because one of the dolphins had got so close, it came up to do its 'morning business' on my foredeck and I was glad for the chance to wash it off!! I'm surprised it didn't bring a newspaper! Back in the harbor, we fought the strong wind down the channel with the smell of the barbeques wafting by. We saw no whales, but perhaps clocked a bit more time in our whale hunting karma to give us hope for the next hunt. It seems most of the Blues have decided to skip our neck of the woods this year and it's always a big ocean out there. Still it was a beautiful day on the water with nice folk and the best dolphin show I've ever seen. The threesome put in around 7:30 at Mothers Beach and had a two hour paddle to Treasure Island. After a nice half hour break and a chat with the lifeguard about shark sightings, they launched through the knee high surf and headed back to Dana Point. A strong tail wind and following seas pushed the three back to the harbor. It wasn't until they rounded the jetty did they realize how strong the wind was blowing. The wind made paddling up the seaboard channel a real challenge. John headed back to Mothers Beach and Ken and Dave knocked off a few rolls. After their brief practice session, Dave and Ken headed to Mothers. As they rounded the middle island of the harbor, two sit on top kayaks were found to be in "spot of bother." The first kayaker was sitting in the back of a double kayak with nobody in the front seat. His bow was pointing to the moon and he was going nowhere. Dave and Ken rafted up with him while he moved to the front seat. This adjustment made paddling in the wind slightly easier and off he went to Mothers Beach. The second sit on top kayaker gave meaning to "deep trouble" in that his hatch cover had blown off and his kayak was deep in the water or sunk. This guy was in the rocks with no PFD haplessly trying to bail out his kayak. Dave and Ken paddled over and attached Ken's tow line to the kayak and Ken towed the kayak back to the beach. Dave signaled down another sit on top and put the guy on the back deck for a trip back to the beach. After everyone was safely on the beach, it was off to Charo Chicken for burritos and the trip debriefing. Another adventure on the high seas ends the day. by KF **************Get the scoop on last night's hottest shows and the live music scene in your area - Check out TourTracker.com! It was a fine sunny morning but dumpy was on the prowl. As we got ready to launch we watched the timing of the incoming sets, everyone hoping for a good launch window. When launch time came one of the group unfortunately got into the surf just when dumpy was feeling mischievous and got punched hard several times before ending up out of his boat as it tumbled through the surf to the shore. He was already tired from paddling the day before so decided to call it a day. That left Pyro Peter O'Sullivan, John Petersen, Patrick Martin, Chris Wood, Baidarka Robert Tongen, and I. We launched and headed east toward Point Dume with a light trailing wind and trailing-quartering seas. We knew there was a chance of paddling into the wind on the return leg, so we kept our eye on the weather. At Point Dume we played in the rocks, practiced rolling in the churned up water, and had a good time. Then we went past the point to land for a break at a beach there. The beach was steep and the waves were dumping right on shore, but everyone made it in without mishap. Some beachgoers commented on Patrick's stylish side-surfing. During the break we noticed the winds were increasing. Whitecaps were forming. We know we were in the wind-shadow of the point so we figured the wind and whitecaps would be more intense when we rounded the point, and so they were. We had a good invigorating paddle back to the launch point. John Petersen was the first to land, and the lifeguard came out with his bullhorn to tell us to land farther westward. John was already in the surf and had a clear path through the swimmers so he was soon ashore. The rest of us paddled past the swimmers and surfers to land near the bridge where the Trancas Canyon Wash goes under PCH. Everyone was all smiles when we got back, having enjoyed a good day on the water with good friends. Afterward we topped up at the How's Market Deli and BBQ.
