Seven of us met on an overcast Sunday morning at Hobie Beach for a day of Greenland rolling. Billy Kroll arrived in his vegetable-oil-powered Mercedes toting waterproof camera gear in the hope of capturing some images. Baidarka Robert Tongen brought out his new home built "black yak". We'll have to give him a new nickname now. Here are some photos of his new boat taken by Peter O: http://gallery.ckf.org/thumbnails.php?album=282. He did a great job building it. Peter O, John Petersen, Paul Jonason, Chris Wood, and I rounded out the group.
As soon as we got on the water people were upside down. As I looked around I saw more boats floating bottom-up than right-side-up. It would be that way for much of the day. Sometimes we worked seriously on specific skills. Other times we just goofed around and experimented to see what we could do with our boats.
After we got warmed up rolling near the beach we headed out to the Pond to get away from the diesel fumes from an idling boat and to look for some crazy water in which to play. The surf was small, but it was perfect for fooling around. Peter had the idea of Norsaq side-surfing and doing all of our usual play stuff with short sticks - about 2 feet long. Some of us spent an hour or so playing in the crazy water with nothing but short sticks. We also found a waterlogged scrap of wood and did rolls with it. Now and then we split into small groups to work on storm rolls, reverse sweeps, butterflys, hand rolls, and so on. You can even watch the video of Peter's brick roll and John's straightjacket roll. :)
Eventually we rounded the breakwater and headed back to Hobie Beach where there was more rolling in store for us.
Paul Jonason did butterfly rolls, proved you don't need a low volume boat to do Greenland rolls, and demonstrated his "Queen Anne Salute".
Chris Wood improved his off-side rolling and also tried John Petersen's boat and did several butterfly rolls.
Peter's hand roll eluded him but he worked on a new Norsaq speed roll and as you'll see in the video he wowed us all with his brick roll. It was impressive watching him handle the 'crazy water' with just a short stick.
Robert looked sleek in his new black yak and got in some rolls.
Billy paddled and he waded in the surf hoping to get some good photos. Hopefully some of them will turn out! He kept us all smiling for the camera.
John Petersen brought out a newly-made rolling aid which he banged out from some discarded lumber. He did a bunch of rolls with it, showed us all how to do flawless forward-finishing rolls, and a bunch of other stuff. Check out the video for his straightjacket roll. :)
