I guess I should report in. I live in City Terrace on top of an east
facing hill about 20 miles west of Chino Hills. I was on the second
floor front porch of my house when the quake hit.

As I'd planned-- I ran through the house to the back while a couple of
little things fell down inside. My house is not built real well and
until I do something about it I figure getting out ASAP is the
sensible move. When I got outside I looked up at the old weed tree
(ailanthus "Tree of Heaven" & empty lots) I wondered if that wasn't
more likely to topple over than the house. These trees have a life of
about 50 years and this one is close to it.

I couldn't figure out why the tree wasn't swaying, I looked around at
the other trees, none of them were swaying, so I went right back to my
porch. I couldn't see any signs of anything shaking or swaying.I
started to wonder if maybe only my house shifted and it wasn't an
earthquake. The aftershocks were not at all distinct but I had the
'after paddle,' feeling for about half an hour. The coffee in my mug
was moving a bit, but nothing exciting. My son called from Cal State
LA, a couple of hundred yards north. He was walking at the time and
didn't notice it at all. As we we talked on the phone helicopters
began hovering overhead. I turned on the TV. One of the stations
showed a water main two blocks away at City Terrace and Eastern
cracked. (There wasn't enough to paddle in, which makes all of this
off topic.) Mark, sympathies for your Ukela...ukelel... musical
instrument.

I'm sure some of the cracks in my walls got bigger, but it's hard to
tell.

Will
