Looked like great teamwork, as usual. Good example of how powerful even small, dumpy shorebreak can be. Feet out launch/landing works the best for me when the surf is breaking that close to shore. I hate being spun around once I have buttoned up my sprayskirt; especially on a steep beach. Dumpy is patient and seems to wait until you are vulnerable. Ann -----Original Message----- From: Mike Bode To: ckf paddlewise Sent: Mon, 2 Jun 2008 1:30 pm Subject: [CKF Info] Long Beach to Cabrillo, pics and TR Hi Paddlers! Patrick Martin and I paddled from Long Beach to Cabrillo (and back) yesterday.? Check out pics and trip report:? Pics at:? http://gallery.ckf.org/thumbnails.php?album=275 Long Beach to Cabrillo Beach, June 1, 08 Neither Patrick Martin nor I could remember anybody having posted a trip report about a paddle from Long Beach to Cabrillo Beach.?? We had started talking about another ?connect-the-dots? paddle and this one would add another leg to our California coastline resume, which, after this weekend, now extends roughly from just south of Point Conception to Alamitos Bay. Patrick opined that there was probably good reason why we?d never heard of anybody doing this particular trip before, and we both had some trepidation about it.? We expected foul, polluted water, the penetrating odor of oil, exhaust fumes, and guano, and heavy boat traffic that would make us constantly have to scurry out of the path of one oil tanker, car carrier, or garbage barge to another in an energy-sapping exercise of life-or-death escape maneuvers.? And the usual strong westerlies that would come up in the afternoon would certainly make this a grueling day paddle that we wouldn?t want to repeat. But none of this turned out to be true.? Although the South Shore Launch Ramp where we put in required a little forbearance in terms of floating trash, water quality, and personal amenities, it served its purpose.? Patrick and I got there around 7:30, despite having gotten lost on the way a couple of times, paid the $10 parking fee, and, by 8:20 were on our way.? We passed the Queen Mary on our way out Long Beach Harbor and also paused to marvel at the immense cruise ship moored just next door.? Our pace was leisurely and we stopped often to look at the sights the harbor had to offer.? We were both particularly intrigued by the flocks of red, white, and blue California Harbor Cranes all neatly lined up in rows, noisily feeding on the countless containers that were being moved in or out of wherever it was that they had to be moved into or out of.? Contrary to our expectations, everything we saw in this industrial landscape was surprisingly neat, clean, and orderly.? The whole horizon, as we paddled along, seemed to be a huge layout of some giant child?s brand new Tonka Toys. Soon we came in sight of Angels Gate lighthouse and we headed out toward it.? We stopped, took some souvenir pictures of this beautiful, old structure, and then continued on to Cabrillo Beach where we finally landed shortly after 11:00am.? It had taken us about 2 ? hours, which was not bad considering our many stops to sightsee. After a 45-minute break, we got back in our boats and headed back to Long Beach.? We had some help from a slight breeze from the west for most of the way and, just like the leg out, we encountered almost no harbor traffic at all.? It was about a 16 NM paddle, roundtrip, with all our detours and meanderings, a longish trip for us, since neither of us has managed yet to get back the good conditioning we had built up last year. After loading up, we adjourned to a local eatery for burgers and shortly afterward, refreshed and strengthened, got back on the road for home.? We had car pooled, and, since Patrick was driving, I for one had a very relaxing trip home. What a nice surprise this trip was.? Though not a ?Beginner Paddle? because of the distance, potential winds and harbor traffic, it?s an entertaining change of pace with lots to see for folks with an eye for industrial art and an appreciation for the day-to-day workings of one of the world?s busiest seaports. You can put this trip on your calendars! It was great seeing a good turnout for the paddle. Our group included Henry & Kathy Pilcher, John & Susanna Joe, Chris Wood, Carole Aldrich, George Manolakas, Carol Fallon, Ben Zeldin, and Chuck Fowler. Susanna had indicated that she wanted to turn around at Arch Rock which is the farthest she's gone in the ocean so when we got close I kept paddling and chatting with her and before she knew it we were at Crystal Cove. From there it's only a 10 minute or so paddle down to Reef Point so on she went. This was her longest paddle to date in the ocean and she did great staying with the group. She's ready for the joint CKF/SDKC paddle on June 22 from Dana Point! We paddled and chatted on our way to Reef Point where Chris and Ben decided to do a quick landing. They changed their mind after seeing all the exposed rocks near the beach from the very low tide. As they paddled back to the group they came close to scraping a few rocks hiding and waiting for them near Reef Point but managed to avoid any damage to their kayaks. Paddling back to the Coast Guard Beach the wind and swells picked up a bit. Nearing a reef just before Arch Rock we found ourselves inside the swells that started to rise and break so we hightailed it out to sea for a safer return to the harbour. Stopping at Pirate's Cove a few of the group played around a bit before we headed back to our cars and then on to a well deserved and welcome lunch at the Fireside. Great group of paddlers and a fun day on the ocean! We got an 8am start under overcast skies and started out for our usual hunting grounds off Dana Point with light boat traffic around us. With only three paddlers, we were quite free to chat about all the other paddlers that weren't along with us on the day. I can only hope we at least presented equal fodder the other group on the water!!! Conditions were nice on the paddle out and we hoped we had improved our whale karma my picking up several groups of balloons floating on the water. After a couple short breaks, we found ourselves about 4 miles off the point, in what in the past has been prime spouting grounds. Our eyes seldom left the horizon as we searched in vain for tell-tale signs of the behemoths. We saw no whale watching boats scouring the water to give us hope of a sighting. We spent the last half hour before returning just enjoying the quite off shore waters lolling about in our boats. We paddled home with nary a dolphin or a seal to visit us. Still, if we didn't get to find a whale, we got to put in a nice, peaceful, 10 mile paddle and perhaps increase our chances on our next hunt. We can't come up empty every time! All week long the forecast had been calling for wind and large swells so we were hoping for challenging conditions. When we arrived it was as calm and flat as it gets. Just another nice warm sunny day in California! :) We spent a half hour or so rolling before heading out to the Pond to see if there was any crazy water there. Instead we found an island where there is usually a submerged sand bar. It was a minus tide this morning and so we paddled the shallow current-swirled channel between the temporary island and the steep shore. For a while we played in the surf, landed, and played some more. We saw Kevin Harris and stopped to say hello, then headed out to sea where the water was crystal clear. Eventually we made our way back to the harbor, landed at 12:30, and headed for Daddio's. Peter and I tried to take some movies on the water. We'll see if any of them turn out. Patrick Martin and I paddled from Long Beach to Cabrillo (and back) yesterday. Check out pics and trip report: Pics at: http://gallery.ckf.org/thumbnails.php?album=275 Long Beach to Cabrillo Beach, June 1, 08 Neither Patrick Martin nor I could remember anybody having posted a trip report about a paddle from Long Beach to Cabrillo Beach. We had started talking about another ???connect-the-dots??? paddle and this one would add another leg to our California coastline resume, which, after this weekend, now extends roughly from just south of Point Conception to Alamitos Bay. Patrick opined that there was probably good reason why we???d never heard of anybody doing this particular trip before, and we both had some trepidation about it. We expected foul, polluted water, the penetrating odor of oil, exhaust fumes, and guano, and heavy boat traffic that would make us constantly have to scurry out of the path of one oil tanker, car carrier, or garbage barge to another in an energy-sapping exercise of life-or-death escape maneuvers. And the usual strong westerlies that would come up in the afternoon would certainly make this a grueling day paddle that we wouldn???t want to repeat. But none of this turned out to be true. Although the South Shore Launch Ramp where we put in required a little forbearance in terms of floating trash, water quality, and personal amenities, it served its purpose. Patrick and I got there around 7:30, despite having gotten lost on the way a couple of times, paid the $10 parking fee, and, by 8:20 were on our way. We passed the Queen Mary on our way out Long Beach Harbor and also paused to marvel at the immense cruise ship moored just next door. Our pace was leisurely and we stopped often to look at the sights the harbor had to offer. We were both particularly intrigued by the flocks of red, white, and blue California Harbor Cranes all neatly lined up in rows, noisily feeding on the countless containers that were being moved in or out of wherever it was that they had to be moved into or out of. Contrary to our expectations, everything we saw in this industrial landscape was surprisingly neat, clean, and orderly. The whole horizon, as we paddled along, seemed to be a huge layout of some giant child???s brand new Tonka Toys. Soon we came in sight of Angels Gate lighthouse and we headed out toward it. We stopped, took some souvenir pictures of this beautiful, old structure, and then continued on to Cabrillo Beach where we finally landed shortly after 11:00am. It had taken us about 2 ?? hours, which was not bad considering our many stops to sightsee. After a 45-minute break, we got back in our boats and headed back to Long Beach. We had some help from a slight breeze from the west for most of the way and, just like the leg out, we encountered almost no harbor traffic at all. It was about a 16 NM paddle, roundtrip, with all our detours and meanderings, a longish trip for us, since neither of us has managed yet to get back the good conditioning we had built up last year. After loading up, we adjourned to a local eatery for burgers and shortly afterward, refreshed and strengthened, got back on the road for home. We had car pooled, and, since Patrick was driving, I for one had a very relaxing trip home. What a nice surprise this trip was. Though not a ???Beginner Paddle??? because of the distance, potential winds and harbor traffic, it???s an entertaining change of pace with lots to see for folks with an eye for industrial art and an appreciation for the day-to-day workings of one of the world???s busiest seaports. You can put this trip on your calendars! Seems like this will become a very popular sport. We had 12 competitors. As first timers we placed our own simple rules. Three players per side in equal kayaks. All Delfin. 4 groups of three contestants. Two 10 minute periods with 5 minutes rest. Exhausting exercise. It was a lot of fun. I was lucky to be among the winning team. Teams were chosen at random. Ball could be kept no more than 10 seconds. It could be passed by hand or with the paddle, not very easy. We started very politely and ended up pushing, pulling, knocking on the other kayak, etc. Nobody capsized in the 80 minutes competition. We still lack malice. We?ll continue to practice since it gives you a lot of boat control and strengthens the muscles needed for waves and ww handling. A guy was hit with the boat bow on his back and he is still sore, so we need to check on safety, protections, and rules to avoid accidents. We?ll check on competition rules and try to play by them so that eventually we?ll be able to compete elsewhere. It was a fun day. They are been not at all shy about saying we don?t belong there. We do of course and they cannot as of yet, discriminate against kayaks without also going after sailboats etc. They have said they intend to make Pier 400 a no go zone and they may well be able to do because there are no marinas back there. In addition to what Mike has said, any sort of confusion or ANY sort of disregard for what they perceive as REAL HARBOR traffic and they will be all over you. They are very predisposed to find something out of order with kayakers. Stay way off to the sides of the channels and when crossing the channel do it very decisively and crisply. The area between the LA Pilots station, at the end of the main channel and Angels Gate can be very messy. It?s a 5 way intersection about a mile wide of channels and marina outlets. High speed power boats mix with the Catalina ferries which are still going 30 to 40 knots, sail boats, pilot boats, also high speed, tug boats, container ships, jet skis, on and on..Timing and discretion here are essential. Any incident here with a kayak will be seen as the result of the kayak not being where it ?belongs?. And not everyone belongs here. Even though all the aforementioned, except container ships, have the ability to see and avoid. They may not. Add to all this the regular Cabrillo wind screaming at a right angle across the channel in the afternoon with its 3 foot whitecaps, well, you should see this area on a hot summer weekend. And anyone out of a kayak in the water here and it will most definitely be a major scene. In this area ya gotta know where the channel markers are and which channel, out of five intersecting, they refer to and stay off to the side or outside of the channels unless crossing. This place is a good urban paddle adventure but there IS MUCH more to it than meets the eye. Twice recreational sport fishing boats have intentionally came straight at Steve Brown and turned away at the last minute with look and glare of you don?t belong here and that wasn?t even in the main channel. In at least 50% of the paddles in the harbor, I?ve been visited by either the Coast Guard or the Harbor Police. If someone wonders if they should be there, they probably don?t belong there. You?ll have to know what you?re doing and look it. The CG and harbor police have said that?s what they particularly key on. Any uncertainty of the rules of the road, seamanship, boat handling and they will be all over you for not belonging there. I?ve been paddling in the harbor off and on For 10 years and have had many interesting encounters with these guys but all ending well. The previous is an accumulation of these encounters for what it is, or isn?t worth. We had s ome help from a slight breeze from the west for most of the way and, just like the leg out, we encountered almost no harbor traffic at all. The last time I paddled in the harbor, there was one docked in a finger that made it impossible to see. The CG on shore pulling security detail, made us cross to the other side of the harbor channel to stay clear of it. In years past, we have also had to tow people on ?beginner? harbor paddles, because they were unable to paddle against the 20 knot head wind that frequently comes up in the afternoon. When you see wind surfers gathering, unless you are a strong and experienced paddler, you probably should be thinking of getting off the water. Its desirable, but if wind, current, traffic, or just being at the outside of the turn make it impractical, you can move (crisply as Jack said) to the other side. Also, at night, lights do not have to be on, they just have to be within reach so they can be turned on to avoid collision. "Those who don't know" include the harbor police. By the way, the fishing boat that played chicken with us (twice) is the "Gale Force". If you encounter this boat in a place with no witnesses, get ready for evasive action. It's amazing how a short walk from the car to the beach can change your opinion. I don't much like the idea of surfing solo, but what choice do I have since Duane got all respectable on me! The surf forecast was 3 to 5 with occasional 6 footers--not really that big, but at the limit for me at my skill level and all by my lonesome. And that's the way I found the beach, with no other kayaks to be seen. So the forecast was pretty accurate, but at least the waves were of a crumbly nature, so they didn't look like they could do much damage. They were pretty stacked up though, so getting out didn't look like it was going to be fun. I took my time past the shore break to get used to the Delfin again. The closer I got to the outside, the more I was fighting over the rows of whitewater coming my way. I took a chance and got a nice ride on one of the smaller waves which added to my confidence factor. I wasn't really worried about riding the waves, it's still my lack of confidence in my rolling and that long San O swim to shore. I finally got a break and made it out through a lull and was glad to see someone in a Scrambler paddling out to join me. At last, someone to drag my lifeless carcass to shore in the event of an untimely demise. I went for broke on a large wave and once making nice progress down the face looked to the side for a shoulder to lean on, but just when I went to take it, a board surfer showed up out of nowhere on his paddle out and I ended up broaching on some big white water. I was glad to ride it out upright and now the chase was afoot. I got some nice rides in the bigger waves with some nice shoulders to ride, but spent a lot of time broached in the white water. On one large one, stuck broached in the large white water, I was able to get turned back around straight just in time to catch the same wave as it reformed with a nice angled ride. What I learned on the day is my kayak needs something that just happens to be spelled out in its name DelFIN. Without a skeg, I can't keep the stern planted to keep a good angle on the waves. Still I was having fun. After each big ride I'd have to deal with the arduous journey back outside through the breakers. I admit I was pretty tired. I'd say old age sucks, but heck, ten years ago I would have died on the first paddle out! I'd gotten some nice rides, so I wasn't so worried about capsizing, figuring I'd had my share of fun on the day. On a nice ride in, I got knocked over trying to exit the wash and rolled up with some help from the shallow sand bar under me. Same thing on the way out, this time going over a big wave. I picked up the next good size wave and rode it into shore. Right outside the shore break the water is pretty deep, so I punched out a couple real rolls just to prove I could. I'm used to sandy beaches, but some of you might be more familiar with the San O shore. I stood for a while enjoying the clacking of the large cobble stones sounding like castanets as the powerful waves ebbed. I lived to tell my tale and had a nice solo surf session. The only casualty on the day was my video mast that broke when a wave upended my kayak on the shore upon landing. I'm glad I'd removed the camera already! Launch time will be at 9:00am from Fisherman's access. Because I'm lazy and I can't think of anything that's changed from the last posting for this same paddle, here are the directions and all the pertinent verbiage that applies once again. Anyone welcome subject to the same conditions stated below. And of course nobody on this paddle is an Instructor or baby sitter or responsible for anything other than their own well being. Having said that, we will of course render any assistance, tips or any other hospitality that is reasonable to expect from all us non instructor, not responsible for you, in anyway, types. You fall down go boom, it's your fault. Isn't that delicately put? But of course, it all has to be said one way or the other. White water boats or sea boats are fine. Tupperware boats strongly suggested. JB To all here are the directions to the Sunday, June 29, Palos Verdes paddle. And I do mean direction"s". Plural. Being as it is on the Palos Verdes Peninsula and depending on the direction you are coming from, there are many ways to get to the launch spot. Almost none of them are very direct given the topography of Palos Verdes and the road layout on the peninsula. I can go through a long text direction thing here or I can clarify what to look for on MapQuest and each can sort out how to best get there dependant on where they are coming from. Go to Map Quest look up "Palos Verdes Peninsula LA County". Once there zoom in on Point Vicente park. It is the point at the southwest corner of the peninsula. The park is where Palos Verdes Drive West turns into Palos Verdes Drive South on the Map Quest map. The launch spot and parking is actually a scenic overlook just east of the park and lighthouse. The lighthouse is not noted on the map nor is the "Fisherman's access" scenic overlook but once there, they are both hard to miss. If you were to leave the park driving east, the next right (1/4 mile) will be the access and parking. As you get close expect to make a few "U" turns, because if you miss the turn off, which is very easy, the road is divided and you'll have to go on to the next opening in the divided road "U" turn and come back around. Any difficulties with This direction process feel free to email me for further clarification. Your choice on routing will depend on where you're coming from, your preference for surface streets or freeways, most direct route or simplest route. You'll see what I mean. I would encourage anyone to join us who can handle the rock beach launch and is interested in rock gardening. It is entirely possible to safely watch and learn others do more advanced play boating while still being very close in and 20 feet away. The general MO is to stay as close to the break zone (you will need to be comfortable here) and rocks as the swell SAFELY allows, from there it is up to each to decide the level of "play". No, we will not just hang in the break zone and get beat up unless we decide to surf a spot. Breaking waves in close proximity to rocks is not desirable. Or healthy. The swell flowing in, around and up and down, around rocks is. Play can be as simple and safe as letting the swell take you in and bow rudder your way around a rock or boulder, then let the swell suck you back out or ride swells up and over rocks for a good drop on the other side. And then there is Steve Brown's all time favorite........yes...The Big POOL. This will not be a paddle about covering distance. It will be about playing in or learning to play in and or around as many features as is entertaining. If we find an interesting feature we will take turns taking advantage of that feature and then move on to the next. In river boating terms that is play boating. Work a spot taking turns, then move to the next. Or proceed single file through a series of maneuvers. If you want to get your heart rate up paddling fast and far, this paddle is not for you. In fact do not come if that's what you want. You won't be happy. I have spent hours and gone no farther than 3 miles and a great time. This where the bow rudders, draw strokes, bracing etc. are absolutely functional and get used constantly. If you want to get your heart rate up with a little sport and technical challenge then please join us. Support and assistance gladly given to any that are interested and can handle the launch. No pressure on anyone to do anything other than paddle the plan mentioned here. Oh uh.keep in mind the launch when you think of bringing your glass boat. Not saying don't bring it...just know it will get .some texture. Any questions about this paddle or about suitability for this paddle feel free to email me. macgrzly at pacbell.net. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... After doing a little on-line research, I found out the auto focus feature was causing it. When I held the camera up to my ear, I could hear the clicking sound caused by the auto focus constantly adjusting. When I changed the focus to infinity or pan, which doesn't adjust the focus, the sound is gone. So if you have the Pentex Optio W10, you may want to reset your focus setting for better sounding videos. They head over to the CG beach while I got ready and when I joined them I found Pete and Jeff Libby there to join us as well. To the side of the beach was another, large group of paddlers getting ready to head out under the expert tutelage of George M. We all headed to Pirate's Cove and we could see a couple yakkers already there who turned out to be the Pilchard bunch. Clearly, they were there to show off their nifty new two-piece Superior GP's and had already warmed up with a coastal paddle. The sun wasn't out yet, but the water didn't seem too cold, but I quickly had to acclimate to the chill. Barb was just getting out her face mask when it slipped out of her hands heading for the briny deep. The briny deep only being 10 to 12 feet here, I donned my mask hoping for a quick retrieval. Sans my PFD, I still was rather buoyant with just my wet suit top, but managed to make it down, but the Eel Grass in the area was too high and after a few tries we left it as a sacrifice to the rolling gods. It didn't take long for Kathy to start to show off with her new paddle. They claimed they were still getting used to them, but Kathy showed off a real nice butterfly roll that had her looking like a pro. She gave Ken a few hints and he was able to do one too, so we already had people learning new skills on the day. About this time, Ben paddled up from his launch site at NAC and joined in the practice Every one kind of paired up to work on sundry skills. H&K worked on more Greenland skills and Ken helped Jeff try out a paddle float reentry roll. Barb and Pete worked on reentries and I just seemed to paddle around watching. Jeff wasn't having any trouble with the paddle float roll, so I graduated him on to my kickboard paddle float. It helped him add a bit of sweep to the maneuver and soon Ken was schooling him in the finer aspects of real rolling. Off to the side, Henry was helping Kathy get set up for a nice static brace. I looked over to see Ben swimming, the victim of a broken paddle shaft on his roll attempt. After a while, I asked Jeff if he wanted to come closer to shore where I could stand up and help him with his roll attempts. Just trying to repeat my rolling class with Jen, I had him do some hip snaps just holding my hands and he came up rather smartly. We moved on to me holding the back of his boat and letting him try to roll on his own and it wasn't taking a lot of help from me to get him up. We gave him the story of keeping his head down and after a couple more tries he rolled up all by himself like a real pro. We figured it best he stop on a high note. Since I was already in the water, I worked with Pete trying out my kickboard paddle float. He was doing well with that and we moved on to trying some real rolling. With Henry giving advice and demonstrations, I think we got Pete moving in the right direction, but we didn't have two new rollers on the day. Still I was glad to see him doing well with the paddle float roll. By this time I hadn't even tried a real roll yet myself. I'd done a reentry roll earlier only to find I should have recharged my bilge pump battery last night! My roll of late has been at the best, iffy. I asked Ken to borrow his boat and despite the tight fit, enjoyed rolling a boat that seems meant to be rolled. Not to be out done, Barb was showing some excellent rolling technique. Of course, Ken in my boat didn't look to have too much trouble rolling my barge. We had had a busy, successful morning of practice and all decided to head to the Fireside for lunch. It was nice to be on hand for someone to do their first successful roll despite the weakest roller giving the advice! You know how much I hate getting wet, but I had a good time anyway. We also saw Howard and Sharon out this morning. This was Sharon's first paddle since her knee surgery and she was doing really well. It was a very busy day on the water. A message from Barb Tomita In a message dated 6/14/2008 3:32:35 P.M. Pacific Daylight Time, sandmarks at ca.rr.com writes: 6/14/08 When I got to the Secret Beach, Ken and Barb were sitting on the sea wall looking like two beached seals--all clad in black rubber ready for our Saturday Wet Works. I came away a lot more confident in my re-entry skills and, thanks to some great help from Ken and Mark, learned how to roll. I can't think of a nicer group of people to flop around in the water with. :-) The only low note of the day for me was that I ended up smashing the lens in my brand new dive mask when doing some T-rescues with Ben. :-( Next time I'm following Barb's advice and buying an el-cheapo mask. Duane, Barb and Ken were there as well as Chuck and his out of town visitors Tabitha and Jonathan(hope I got those right). It was an overcast day as we made it out of the harbor to find a derelict, old sailboat making its way out to what could only be misfortune! Besides the usual harbor chop, there was a rolling swell coming in, but conditions weren't too bad for hunting. We were all making good time until our first break, when Chuck and his friend decided to switch boats. About the same time, Tabitha started feeling the sudden onset of Mal de Mer, so four of our group decided it was best to head back in. That left the burden of finding the Blues to Duane, Ken and I. We paddle out to our usual haunt about 4 miles off shore under very quiet conditions. All of a sudden, right off Duane's bow there was a small boil of what looked like small flippers sticking out of the water, but they didn't hang out long enough for us to figure out what they were. Soon the head of a seal popped up close by and we wondered if he'd been rounding up some fish dinner. There were no boats close by; nothing to suggest any whales in the area, so we just settled down for a long rest to see what my arise. Without any sun, we could enjoy just hanging out bobbing in the swells, but after about 45 minutes, we figured the Blues still aren't ready for visiting. Even without any sightings, the day seemed to go by pretty fast. As a consolation prize on the way home, a long finned tuna surprised us by leaping out of the water and I have to admit we were grateful for any excitement. We made it back to the beach with only a few more miles under our belts for our troubles. Mark Sanders www.sandmarks.net # -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
