Jeff:

It may be that there are simply MORE of the GW sharks off our coast,
after years of increasing supplies of local prey (Marine Mammal
Protection Act) and protection for themselves as well. But here is
something I learned while producing my podcast, Shark Conspiracies:
The great white sharks off our coast here are DIFFERENT than the ones
in say, S. Africa or Australia. They are genetically slightly
different, as we now know their populations do not mingle, and
second, the ones here are better fed. This is indicated by the fact
that the liver size to body mass ratio is much higher in our local
GWs verses the others, and one theory is that this, in part, explains
why so many GW encounters here seem to be test bites or bumps rather
than full-on predatory strikes that you see off of S. Africa or
Australia.

Sincerely,
Kevin Harris
