Gosh Joanne, that reminds me of the area between Scorpion and little Scorpion anchorage out at Santa Cruz Island! Same thing happens there, the swells and or currents wrap around little Scorpion rock from the east and west and when they come together it's usually with a big ol' splash into the air. Another added feature at this location is that the bottom is a small rocky reef from the island to the big rock making this area fun to pass through at a low or minus tide!

??Conditions where waves break from both directions at once?? Sure thing, a number of times.
The best ever was between the segments of Anacapa Island. Doug and I were leading a group down the chain of islands from Point Conception to Ventura and saw a set of refracted waves from a big South Pacific summer (here) swell wrapping around Anacapa from both sides. We watched and timed the next big set, positioning ourselves (at high tide) on the bit of land parallel to and right between where the waves would collide. As if on command, two three-foot open faces hit us at once, squeezing our double up into the air like a watermelon seed what seemed like ten feet out of the water. Actually we cleared the wave tops by two feet then dropped down, each bracing on opposite sides, and let out lots of excited noises! Friends who were paddling with us yelled louder than we did!
Sorry to all for this late response, but we just returned last night from kayaking (and hiking) in Croatia. No surf there, just wind waves when storms pass through.
Thanks for asking!

Yesterday, Mike Bode, George Miller, Chris Wood, Patrick Martin, and I set off on a harbor to harbor paddle and return from Channel Islands to Ventura Harbor. As we exited Channel Islands Harbor, we went through an area of shoals that we frequently like to play in. Yesterday, the water conditions were completely different than anything I have ever seen.
Patrick was several yards behind when, out of nowhere, a breaking wave hit both of us on our left side. I immediately braced into it and was soon side surfing (as was Patrick). Out of the corner of my eye, I caught a glimpse of something on my right and found there was a breaking wave coming at me from that side too. Now my dilemma was “which side do I brace and edge towards?” Somehow, I managed to switch sides just as the other wave hit me.
A big “whoo hoo” and a couple of paddle strokes and I was out of it. Patrick and I were both laughing and we both thought we heard Dumpy saying, “wait ‘til next time.”
Has anybody else ever been in ocean conditions where waves were breaking on you from two opposite directions at once?
