I arrived just after 6:30 this morning to find Jeandrew and Conner loading up to cross to Catlaina. I didn't recognize Jeandrew until she put on her distinctive hat. Dublin Dave showed up a few minutes later and we had a good conversation with the crossers.
I went out to practice my rolls while Dave got his gear together and waited for other paddlers to show up. I did not expect anyone to show up with my recent safety record.
No strikes on me today until I looked at my paddle after we landed (film at eleven). I brought my paddles with me this time and my form fitting seat was back in place. I filled my float bags, installed a bow line, checked my radio, put on my helmet and went out to roll several times before we started.
Ken and Barb showed up some time after seven, about the same time as Mark. I paddled back in to greet them. We launched through monster 10 inch surf with sneaker waves approaching and sometimes exceeding 1 foot. We paddled leisurely up to Smugglers Cove. I resisted all temptation to go into the rocks even though the conditions were flat. I just rolled a few times and kept going. At Smugglers we landed for a break. The tide was the lowest I'd seen it there. It was rocky with the tide so far out. I landed without incident and like a good host I helped everyone get there boats out of the rocks without damage. After the break I shoved everyone out to sea without scraping any boats up (obvious attempt to polish tarnished image). I had no trouble getting out but must have hit a rock with my paddle somewhere getting out.
On the way back Mark wanted to check out the two little slots next to Smugglers. We both went in and out safely. On landing (safely) back at Cabrillo I discovered that the end of my Strosaker custom built paddle was damaged. I will return it to the manufacturer this Wednesday. He may kill me or take my paddle away from me. I I will throw myself on the mercy of the court. If I'm lucky the manufacturer will only abuse me verbally and repair my paddle.
Well that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
