With an upcoming crossing on my mind, and no paddle partner for the day, I
decided to get a workout to see if I am as out of shape as I think.

Having yet to paddle Lake Hodges this season I decided to do a solo paddle
on the lake as it is near my home. There's something to be said about being
asleep at 7:00am and being on the water at 8:00.

The lake was overcast and the water quality was dominated by a green algae
bloom. It made me wonder if that was why every cove, nook and cranny had a
bass boat.

The plan was to paddle at 4 knots for 4 hours as a way to challenge myself
and give focus to the morning.

The first couple of hours went well, but as the lake is only about 11 NM
around, I had to paddle up toward the dam a second time as the wind began to
increase making it difficult to maintain the 4 knot pace especially when I
was trying to bank minutes toward a water break.

Although I often paddle over 4 knots in San Diego Bay, keeping up that pace
for 16 NM made for a long hard morning, even on a Lake. It made me
appreciate even more the top finishers in the annual Bay 2 Bay Regatta
coming up again in San Diego.

Seeing my GPS reach 16NMiles a couple of minutes before the log registered
4:00 felt like an accomplishment as I loaded the boat, ate some Advil and
soaked in the Jacuzzi.
