[CKF Info] Towing

Thanks everyone.

I will be on a Catalina 36' which is fairly slow and I am planning on not exceeding 6 knots (I don't think that the boat will go much over this).

I was thinking of carrying one or two gallon water bottles at the aft bulkhead. I was also thinking of towing them close in and with the line over the aft railings to keep the bows up a bit.

I thought about having them on deck but the Current Designs are probably too long plus I am actually taking 4 boats over (5 counting the dinghy); the two Current Designs and two sot's that will be on deck because they are only 12 and 11 feet and will fit on the foredeck.

Two more items I remembered (it's been a while):

  - Tie the line(s) on your boat high
  - Try a "spreader" (lines fastened to your port and starboard and to a single point on the kayak bow.

Remember, kayaks are usually displacement hulls and are not designed to move at planing speeds.

A good, tight cockpit cover is strongly recommended. Make sure the tow line is centered on the kayak. A little extra weight in the stern of the kayak is preferable, but don't leave your gear in the kayak. I've tried it with the rudder down and up-- results depend on the boat.. Try it each way for a while and see what works. Keep the kayak fairly close in on the back first downslope of the wake. This experience is based upon towing with large powerboats (48' Hatteras LRC and Mikelson 48'). Good luck. Consider carrying them on deck if they will fit- especially in bad weather.

      Hey Gang:

I am sailing to Catalina for the 4th of July and would like to take my boats with me for some paddling at the island.

Has anybody out there towed a sea kayak over open ocean? Any tips?

I have a great deal of sailing experience with towing dinghies and the like but not kayaks.

I have a Current Designs Gulfstream and Squamish. Our speed will be in the 5 to 7 knot rainge.

If the sailboat were big enough I would put them on deck but we are going on a 36' sailboat with a total of 6 people aboard.
