Mike Kennedy and I met this morning at 0700 and prepared for an 0730 launch
to Mission Bay. Just before launch Jake appeared out of the surf in his
surf boat and we stood around and talked for few minutes finally launching
into the monstrous 2' surf. The water was warm, the air was warm and there
was a hint of a fog over the water. The sea was relatively flat and not
much was predicted.
As we headed south we were met with occasional huge sets which added some
definite flavor to the water as we paddled just outside of the surf zone
watching the surfers get tumbled by these rapidly closing out sets with a
nasty shore break.
Somewhere just above Crystal Pier we picked up a pod of 5 or 6 dolphin
including 2 youngsters. They stayed with us, or we with them, almost to sea
wall of mission bay. A couple of times the youngsters got caught in the
surf and surfed alongside the board surfers.
We surfed our way into the channel along the north sea wall, hugging the
rocks until we ran into a dead sea lion bottom up.
All in all-great weather, great company, great day on the water. About 10
miles, a little over 2 hours at a leisurely pace and a little time with the
native fauna. Oh, credit given where credit is due-fantastic shuttle
service back to La Jolla by Ines after her Sunday morning run.

Life is not meant to be a journey to the grave
with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty
and well preserved body, but rather to skid in
broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out,
or parts replaced and loudly proclaiming -
WOW- WHAT A RIDE!!
