Hi Steve,
This was about the Carpinteria paddle, right? I only saw a few
scattered points on the map.
For those purposes I think there are better ways. I have the cheapest
GPS unit around (Garmin ETrex), imported GPS data through the
serial port, wrote some software and got the route and speed from
a trip Goleta Beach-SB harbor I made, long ago:

You would not want to use my prototype but it shows what can be done.
I would think this type of software should be available free by now,
somewhere. No SPOT subscription needed, just a GPS unit with
a low power mode.
