Thanks for the eagle update.  When I saw the bird  and mentioned it to Steve and Peter I was accused of drinking too much bilge water.  It was only after my sighting was verified by Andy (who was in a better location to observe the bird) that they grudgingly acknowledged that I might not have been halucinating as much as they suspected.

That was the first paddle that I have ever seen dolphins and an eagle withing a few minutes of each other.   I saw a lot of things that day that I had not seen before.

The fact that I'm still grinning after being back at work for two days is proof that paddling with my Friends is strong medicine for the soul.  I think I'll call it "Vitamine F"

  Your observation of this bird flying along the Carpentaria bluffs was incredible!  

  I contacted the Channel Islands National Park and this is what I was told by the Chief, National Resources Manager, 

  It sounds like you saw one of the birds that came through the hack towers
  on Santa Cruz Island.  The Hack Tower is the structures that we constructed on Santa Cruz Island
  and they were the artificial nest for the young birds before they were
  ready to fly.

  Since we know that A-29 is in that area, I don't think it is critical to
  get all observations reported.  It sounds like this bird has been hanging
  out on the SB/Ventura coast for a while.  They have blue wing tags.

  I will pass your observation on to the Institute for Wildlife Studies.
  Often, by the time a bird is 3 years old they have lost their radio
  transmitters and we rely on visual observations to keep track of birds.


  And their Interpretative Ranger said,

  Good sighting. We have been tagging all the Santa Cruz birds with blue wing
  tags. So it sounds like you saw a bird that was released on Santa Cruz. If
  I find out more information I will send it on.

  I've also attached a very recent Press Release that I thought you might enjoy reading.  It came to me via the Park too.

    Well summed up Steve...

    I'd just like to add that we had one amazing wildlife sighting in addition to the dolphins (they are always amazing).

    A bald eagle swooped down from one of the trees along a bluff, few past us and then returned past us again.  Unmistakable white head, with mottled brown and white plumage...a juvenile I think.  I believe I also noticed a pair of blue tags on the underside of its wings.  My guess is it's a monitored bird from Santa Cruz.  I'm no ornithologist, so anyone else please feel free to chime in...but this was no pelican or turkey vulture...and different from any hawk I've seen.

    As if this part of the world isn't spectacular enough, we can now look forward to the occasional eagle sighting on the coast!  Wow.

      Thirteen of us met at Carpinteria City Beach this morning with paddlers from Santa Barbara County in the North, LA County in the South, and the UK to the East. We were joined by a very nice young woman, Alice Courvoisier. Although she is French, she works in the UK and is here to do some work at UCSB on solar physics. I think our rocket scientist Patrick, was the only one who understands what she is doing.
