color:#1F497D'>To all here are the directions to the April 20<sup>th</sup>
Palos Verdes paddle. And I do mean direction”s”. Plural. Being as it is on the
Palos Verdes Peninsula and depending on the direction you are coming from,
there are many ways to get to the launch spot. Almost none of them are very
direct given the topography of Palos Verdes and the road layout on the
peninsula. I can go through a long text direction thing here or I can clarify
what to look for on MapQuest and each can sort out how to best get there
dependant on where they are coming from. Go to Map Quest look up “Palos Verdes
Peninsula LA County”. Once there zoom in on Point Vicente park. It is the point
at the southwest corner of the peninsula. The park is where Palos Verdes Drive
West turns into Palos Verdes Drive South on the Map Quest map. The launch spot
and parking is actually a scenic overlook just east of the park and lighthouse.
The lighthouse is not noted on the map nor is the “Fisherman’s access” scenic overlook
but once there, they are both hard to miss. If you were to leave the park
driving east, the next right (1/4 mile) will be the access and parking. As you
get close expect to make a few “U” turns, because if you miss the turn off,
which is very easy, the road is divided and you’ll have to go on to the next
opening in the divided road “U” turn and come back around. Any difficulties

clarification. Your choice on routing will depend on where you’re coming from,
your preference for surface streets or freeways, most direct route or simplest
route. You’ll see what I mean.</span><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";
color:#1F497D'> I would encourage anyone to join
us who can handle the rock beach launch and is interested in rock gardening. It
is entirely possible to safely watch and learn others do more advanced play
boating while still being very close in and 20 feet away. The general MO is to
stay as close to the break zone (you will need to be comfortable here) and
rocks as the swell SAFELY allows, from there it is up to each to decide
the level of “play”. No, we will not just hang in the break zone and get beat
up unless we decide to surf a spot. Breaking waves in close proximity to rocks
is not desirable. Or healthy. The swell flowing in, around and up and down,
around rocks is. Play can be as simple and safe as letting the swell take
you in and bow rudder your way around a rock or boulder, then let the swell
suck you back out or ride swells up and over rocks for a good drop on the other
side. And then there is Steve Brown’s all time favorite……………………yes…..The Big
POOL. This will not be a paddle about covering distance. It will be about
playing in or learning to play in and or around as many features as is
entertaining. If we find an interesting feature we will take turns taking
advantage of that feature and then move on to the next. In river boating terms
that is play boating. Work a spot taking turns, then move to the next. Or
proceed single file through a series of maneuvers. If you want to get your
heart rate up paddling fast and far, this paddle is not for you. In fact, do
not come if that’s what you want. You won’t be happy. I have spent hours and
gone no farther than 3 miles and a great time. This where the bow rudders, draw
strokes, bracing etc. are absolutely functional and get used constantly. If you
want to get your heart rate up with a little sport and technical challenge then
please join us. Support and assistance gladly given to any that are interested
and can handle the launch. No pressure on anyone to do anything other than
paddle the plan mentioned here. Oh uh…keep in mind the launch when you think of
bringing your glass boat. Not saying don’t bring it…..just know it will get

April 20. We will be rock gardening and surfing. The launch site is from
rocks into surf with a hill carry to get there. PFD and Helmets are the minimum
requirement. This is not the place to do your first surf launch. Rock gardens
are not forgiving. If you are comfortable with the launch come and join us. You
don't have to go into the more adult features. One can learn a great deal just
watching Jack.<br>
