Trancas (Zuma Beach) Sunday morning for a planned paddle to Point Dume. It was a
fine sunny morning but dumpy was on the prowl. As we got ready to launch we
watched the timing of the incoming sets, everyone hoping for a good launch
window. </FONT></SPAN></DIV>

<DIV><SPAN class=376350217-14072008><FONT face=Arial size=2>When launch time
came one of the group unfortunately got into the surf just when dumpy was
feeling mischievous and got punched hard several times before ending up out of
his boat as it tumbled through the surf to the shore. He was already tired from
paddling the day before so decided to call it a day. That left Pyro Peter
O'Sullivan, John Petersen, Patrick Martin, Chris Wood, Baidarka Robert Tongen,
and I.</FONT></SPAN></DIV>

<DIV><SPAN class=376350217-14072008><FONT face=Arial size=2>We launched and
headed east toward Point Dume with a light trailing wind and trailing-quartering
seas. We knew there was a chance of paddling into the wind on the return leg, so
we kept our eye on the weather. At Point Dume we played in the rocks, practiced
rolling in the churned up water, and had a good time. Then we went past the
point to land for a break at a beach there. The beach was steep and the waves
were dumping right on shore, but everyone made it in without mishap. Some
beachgoers commented on Patrick's stylish side-surfing. </FONT></SPAN></DIV>

<DIV><SPAN class=376350217-14072008><FONT face=Arial size=2>During the break we
noticed the winds were increasing. Whitecaps were forming. We know we were in
the wind-shadow of the point so we figured the wind and whitecaps would be more
intense when we rounded the point, and so they were. We had a good invigorating
paddle back to the launch point. John Petersen was the first to land, and the
lifeguard came out with his bullhorn to tell us to land farther westward. John
was already in the surf and had a clear path through the swimmers so he was soon
ashore. The rest of us paddled past the swimmers and surfers to land near the
bridge where the Trancas Canyon Wash goes under PCH.
